Charlie, I’m visiting Puerto Viejo in Aug. just wondering if you’ve visited there yet? Hoping to photograph birds. If you are aware of any locations in or around that area, I’d appreciate your input.
Debbie
Debbie,
I photograph birds everywhere I go in Costa Rica, though some places have more birds than others. Puerto Viejo is not necessarily the best place, but I’ve done okay there.
First is your choice of hotel/lodge and the best for birds I’ve been told is Selva Bananito Lodge up in the hills above Puerto Viejo. I also heard that they have no electricity all night and I sleep with a CPAP machine, so I haven’t tried them yet. I usually use Hotel Banana Azul in Puerto right on the beach and with a lot of birds in their gardens. I’ve also used Cariblue once which is in the forest and okay for birds.
From Puerto Viejo you will want to go birding in two National Parks nearby: Gandoca-Manzanillo and Cahuita, both have a lot of birds, especially in early morning.
See my separate photo galleries on visits in the are in 2018 — 2017 — 2016 — 2015
Each of these photo galleries will show you different possibilities in the area including the best place to photograph the rare and endangered Great Green Macaw at the ARA Center in Manzanillo.
Buen Viaje!
