An Occasional Dragonfly . . .

. . . is all I get in my garden since I am not very close to consistent water like the little stream about two blocks away. And this one is actually a Damselfly that I have identified as a female Thorn-tipped Dancer, Argia elongata (linked to my gallery), though I’m never totally sure of my IDs on these little guys. I also just submitted it to iNaturalist Costa Rica where the Dragonfly Expert there will confirm or correct my identification. It is always fun to find something different from the usual wildlife in my garden. 🙂

Thorn-tipped Dancer, Atenas, Alajuela, Costa Rica.

  1. About a week ago we had swarms of them in our side yard for an hour or so for several days. We were mystified because we could not see any insects they were feeding on. Perhaps something tiny. Anyway they are gone now but it was fun.

    1. You are right on Calle Nueva which has a deep drainage ditch with lots of water this rainy season and they usually stay near water. Plus you are closer to that stream than me, both of which can attract dragonflies. And I really don’t know what they eat! 🙂 But tiny insects sounds like a possibility! 🙂 They’re fun to watch anyway!
