Maybe it was typical of most university students, but I did not go home much or otherwise see my family of origin much after going away to the university, here at OU and the same later for Ouachita and Southwestern Seminary. Then I’m out on my own after that, making family mostly a Thanksgiving or Christmas holiday visit and even that diminished over the years.
I didn’t really get to see Bonnie “grow up” as she was only around 5 or 6 when I went away to OU. More than once I’ve told Bonnie that we grew up in two different families. And that was also around the time our family was changing in multiple ways. Mom and Dad’s marriage seemed to be falling apart during the Tulsa years. Jerry was withdrawn and depressed and that came to a head after I moved to Ouachita in 1960.
I regularly wrote Mother, often addressing letters to the whole family. Though she saved most of my letters to her, I deeply regret I did not save letters from her. But my letters page here still tells a lot about those 3 semesters or year and a half. Below are the only photos I can find of family during these 3 semesters:
Family Photos 1958-59
I imagine they had more photos of the family, but these are the only ones I could find for this time period.
