Not good quality photos, but they show what you can see at Tortuguero and then tomorrow I will have some more small “land birds” to share. But here are my efforts to catch these last 4 water birds . . .
Something I’ve always enjoyed is catching a bird with live food like this Anhinga with a fish at Caño Negro Reserva on that river in the feature photo at top.
If all goes according to the doctor’s plans I am today at home still recuperating from surgery and hope to give more “live updates” in the next 2 or 3 days. Thanks for putting up with a week of “pre-scheduled” blog posts! I hope to be current again by the end of this week.

Black-cheeked Woodpecker Along the Puerto Viejo River Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, Costa Rica Note how his tail braces him on tree trunk.
I earlier posted a photo of a different woodpecker, the Pale-billed Woodpecker found behind my cabin at Selva Verde Lodge which is even more impressive! I was much closer!

Anhinga Along the Puerto Viejo River Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí, Costa Rica This is the typical pose of a male drying his wings, but the male neck is usually black, so this may be a female, though her neck is usually lighter than this. See other photo.

PERSONAL UPDATE: I’ve had what I thought was a bad cold for the last week+ or maybe allergies or sinusitis. Well it is probably volcanic ash that continues to fall over the central valley from Turrialba Volcano which won’t quit belching smoke/ash.
Now I truly begin my report on the two day visit to Nicaragua in two nature reserves. In Juan Venado Refuge my boat tip included visiting what we called a “Rookery” in South Florida, a collection of tree islands where hundreds if not thousands of birds build nests, lay eggs, and raise their young until they can fly. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh! He looks just like daddy! 🙂

Wow! I’m having fun! There are so many neat places like this for short and brief trips and this is just the beginning of bird photos from these two days. There will be many more the next few days and some other animals and interesting sights too! So much to see!

And here are about 15 more species that I got photos of plus of course seeing others. You can see why I love Tortuguero! And a few of these were first-time sightings for me which will be added to my Birds of Costa Rica Photo Gallery.
