Giant Swallowtail

Giant Swallowtail, Atenas, Costa Rica

This was one of the butterflies in my garden this morning that I haven’t seen here for awhile. He is similar to te Broad-banded Swallowtail and a little bit like the Thoas & the Ornythion Swallowtails, so you have to examine the details in the photos for a good ID. 🙂

Two Different Swallowtails Sharing Flowers

Mid-morning as I walked through the garden, June 15, these two different species of Swallowtails were the only ones flitting around the flowers or mainly just the Porter Weeds. Neither are new to me and in fact you can see that I have better photos in their respective Photo Galleries:

Giant Swallowtail

Another common butterfly in my garden here in Atenas, Alajuela Province, Costa Rica is the Giant Swallowtail, Papilio rumiko (Link to Wikipedia) and I just noticed that ones here in Central America and Western U.S. have been re-classified, while the ones in Eastern U.S. are called Papilio cresphontes, for those really into insect ID! 🙂 Many websites not updated still have them all as cresphontes, including my trusty Swift Guide to Butterflies. So you may have read it first here! The Giant Swallowtails in Costa Rica are Papilio rumiko! 🙂

Giant Swallowtail

Butterflies continue to demand my attention around the house as seen by this guy yesterday – the Giant Swallowtail (and I’ve shown several on the blog).

With only wrens and thrushes around the house now, I hope to check out Calle Nueva this morning or tomorrow morning for maybe some different birds. The days remain pleasant with partial sun and usually an afternoon shower, keeping everything green! Costa Rica’s “Winter” or “Rainy Season” is still my favorite time of year here. Pura vida! Pure life!

Costa Rica Travel Rules

Entrance & Travel Protocols for My EU, UK, and Canada Friends who can visit beginning August 1. This list is thanks to our friends at “Two Weeks in Costa Rica” website & blog. It is really mostly common sense precautions since we still have cases of COVID19 here, like washing hands, wearing mask, and expecting some differences in the “yellow zones” and “orange zones” which are based on how many cases there, including fewer businesses opened. There is also a required health insurance you can get at the airport.

Sorry for the inconveniences but our Ministry of Health precautions are the reason Costa Rica has the lowest COVID rate in all of Latin America or maybe all of the Americas.

Giant Swallowtail

The Giant Swallowtail is a fairly common butterfly here and even in the states, but I haven’t shown one in a good while, especially the under-side like the photo above. The topside of this fellow (below) is the more familiar black and yellow shown here on the same butterfly photographed above! Yeah, I know, they look different as do the top & bottom of many butterflies. Read about Giant Swallowtails on Butterflies and Moths of North America.

A New Blog Feature in this New Website

You can hover over the top Menu Item “Blog” above for  Category Sub-menus that will drop down. Go down to “Nature” and its submenu “Butterflies” to see all the blog posts I have made about butterflies since 2014. In this case, 6 pages of butterfly posts! Some old posts are mixed subjects with too many photos. Now I am trying to stay focused on one “category” (WordPress term)  at a time with no more than 2 photos per post and a short, easy-to-read post like above. And you will see that there are many other “Categories” to follow if interested, with “Birds” being the largest and more are being added. And of course you can click on “Blog” Menu item and see all the posts in reverse chronological order or most recent on top.

All of the posts are also searchable in the right hand column or right sidebar by tags, categories, or by date. This makes my blog posts the main focus and main information found on my website now with multiple ways to find old posts. This is the strength of WordPress hosted websites, being blog-focused with many ways to utilize collections of posts.

You will also find a lot of “static” (WordPress term) or non-blog pages which I will tell about in another blog post.

Feel free to explore your interests now within the blogs through the pull-down menus or search boxes. I am having fun creating little articles about my interests, especially when I can share nature photography from my new home country of Costa Rica!

Giant Swallowtail Butterfly (Underneath View), Atenas, Costa Rica

This is similar to the Thoas Swallowtail, but I’m voting on Giant Swallowtail since Thoas is supposedly found mostly in the wet Caribbean and South Pacific. We are finally getting rain here today after much of the week without rain, even though it is “Rainy Season!” I don’t have to water when it rains!   🙂   If you want to live in a garden, you have to tend it!
