Alajuela Province or North-Central Costa Rica

Some of my favorite places are in the province that I live in and my top two lodges, mainly because of the large number of bird species. As a person without a car I at first traveled to these places by public bus which is certainly the most economical way to travel. Often you must first travel to Alajuela or San Jose to get a direct bus to some of these small out-of-the-way places, but that is part of the adventure. And bus travel is an adventure! 🙂

I am not ranking the hotels on these pages, though the first two below are probably my top two favorites for multiple reasons. I earlier ranked lodges by how many bird species I photographed there, two different times in my blog. The last time or most recent was in 2021 at New Ranking of Birding Lodges! 🙂 That is based solely on how many bird species I photographed.

Below are listed in order of last visited with the most recent on top.
