Danta Corcovado Lodge, Corcovado NP

This was one of my early favorites and I still intend to return. It is very near the park entrance at the Los Patos Ranger Station on the east-central side of the large national park (largest rainforest park in Central America) and the beginning of multiple cross-park trails for overnight hiking only with a guide (I did not do). This part of the park had more birds than the other two I’ve visited and different birds & wildlife than on lodge property. Both were great and the treetops tower or they say “Canopy Tower” for early morning bird photography at the lodge was great! The only other lodge I’ve been to in CR with such a tower is Arenal Observatory Lodge + one in Panama, Tranquilo Bay Lodge. Read more about this small wilderness lodge at Danta Corcovado Lodge WEBSITE.

Nature & Other Activities

  • See the “Likes.” For me birding on lodge property was excellent and the guided hike in the park a big plus.
  • The night hike at lodge was excellent for frog photos!
  • The Canopy Tower for birds in the treetops
  • See the Lodge List of Other Possible Activities that include kayaking, chocolate tour and indigenous people experience that I didn’t do.

Rooms & Food

  • Rooms/Cabins are older but comfortable.
  • The food was surprisingly very good for such an out of the way place!

Getting There

  • If you want to drive there from Atenas, it is 322 km or 5 hrs. 20 min.
  • I Fly Sansa from San Jose Airport to Puerto Jimenez in about 30 minutes and the lodge scheduled a taxi to pick me up at the airport for the drive north of Puerto Jimenez to the lodge. About $100 each direction.
  • The Public Bus from Atenas requires two buses, going first to San Jose and then take the Puerto Jimenez bus but get off at their stop in La Palma de Osa, the closest bus stop to the lodge. Take a taxi or call the lodge for pickup. Total time is about 9 hours because the bus stops at most towns along the route. Find schedule on: https://thebusschedule.com/cr/
