This is my second favorite in San Gerardo de Dota. And if you are a waterfall enthusiast, then go to this lodge. They have a beautiful one that no other lodge there has, including Savegre! Read more about them on their website: Trogon Lodge. It was in 2014 when I stayed 2 or 3 nights there, so it has been awhile.
Would I Return Here?
Yes, though I still prefer Hotel Savegre as my first choice, even without a waterfall! 🙂

- Their beautiful grounds and location on the Savegre River.
- Their beautiful waterfall.
- The optional tour to top of Quetzal National Park.
Dislikes
- There were only 2 or 3 others there when I was there in a September. Thus not very alive or active.

Nature & Other Activities
- Great hiking trails to their waterfall and large, beautiful grounds around the cabins with lots of flowers. A relaxing place, though cold at night.
- A good number of birds on their property, though not as many as at Savegre.
- See their listed “Experiences” online that include a pre-breakfast Quetzal Tour, a later other birds tour, and the only lodge I know that will take you to a mountain top in the national park above “Cerro de la Muerte” for totally different alpine birds (Volcano Junco) and beautiful vistas. See my final photo below. You need a jacket! 🙂

Rooms & Food
- Nice basic rooms in multiple cabins with heat which you may need at night.
- Because there were few people there when I was there, the food service seemed limited but all I had was very good and the specialty was the dinner one night of fresh mountain trout from their own trout ponds.
Getting There
- Driving from Atenas is 124 km or about 3 hours.
- Most tour companies provide transportation to the lodge. I use Walter Ramirez in Atenas, Walter’s Taxis & Tours, call or WhatsApp (506) 8873 4266.
- Public bus does not go to the lodge, but you can get a bus to a further south location that will stop and let you off at the highway exit for San Gerardo de Dota and the lodge will pick you up there. Talk to the lodge about which bus is better. And see schedules on https://thebusschedule.com/cr/
